Join us we take the greatest operatic saga ever written—a massive 19-hour, four-opera epic cycle—and condense it to about 10 hours, spread over four evenings. The re-orchestration by internationally acclaimed composer Jonathan Dove has been hailed as “an astonishing achievement… done with an authentically thrilling grandeur.”
The Ring Cycle is a multi-year project, with one production being staged in each of the first three years of the project. The cycle will begin with The Rhinegold in 2018. In the final year, all four operas will be staged as part of our Summer Festival.
- 2018 Rhinegold
- 2019 The Valkyrie
- 2020 Siegfried
- 2021 all three above, plus The Twilight of the Gods

When Pittsburgh Festival Opera last mounted this ambitious work 12 years ago, it was hailed as as an artistic triumph. A sampling of the rave reviews include:
“Pittsburgh’s first Ring… achieved Wagner’s ideal of ‘total theater’, thanks to Jonathan Eaton’s brilliant direction… a thrilling experience, the best operatic staging seen in Pittsburgh in a long time… This weekend’s production of The Ring is a triumph for Opera Theater of Pittsburgh.”
“It was Eaton’s direction that bridged the gap from mini to major Ring... an excellent introduction to one of the monuments of Western civilization.”
