From Ruby Bridges to Malala, Boko Haram to...your next-door neighbor?
2017 and 2018 seem to have marked a turning point in the rights of women. But of all the rights women have been denied around the world, denial of the right to education has been one of the root causes that have kept women from gaining true equality with men.

Fight for the Right is the next work in our Music that Matters series, and is a global commissioning competition for female composer and librettist teams to create original music dramas inspired by themes of girls and women transforming their lives through education. We have received fifty submissions from around the world. Excerpts from three prize-winning semi-finalist works will be featured this season, and performed by our Young Professional Artists. The winning work will be produced as a mainstage production during Pittsburgh Festival Opera's 2019 summer festival.

What will be their story? We want to amplify girls’ and women’s voices, offer them a platform to imagine, speak, sing, and write about what they can change, what they can achieve, how they can better their lives through access to education. Only the educated are free.

We are inviting you, our audience, to be a part of our process of selecting the winning opera. Join us and let your voice be heard!
