A Gathering of Sons is the new social justice opera composed by Dwayne Fulton with influences of jazz, gospel and modern-classical music, with a libretto by Tameka Cage Conley, her first project for Pittsburgh Festival Opera.

OPERA America announces recipients of the Opera Fund: Audience Development Grants
OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading champion for American opera, is pleased to announce it has awarded grants to 10 opera companies through The Opera Fund: Audience Development grant program, which promotes deep learning experiences about new or infrequently produced American operas and music-theater works. Each grant supports audience development activities associated with a specific work being produced by a Professional Company Member of OPERA America.

The world premiere A NEW KIND OF FALLOUT is showcased in Opera Theater of Pittsburgh’s fourth SummerFest season. Inspired by environmentalist Rachel Carson, the new opera features music by acclaimed New York-based composer Gilda Lyons and a libretto by award-winning Pittsburgh playwright Tammy Ryan. Operas by Strauss and Mozart sung in English, a beloved Broadway musical, family fare, recitals, late-night cabaret, and much more fill the calendar for Western Pennsylvania’s only classical-music based festival, all performed in the beautiful and historic Twentieth Century Club, 4201 Bigelow Blvd, Pittsburgh (15213)

The future stars of opera will shine during the third annual Mildred Miller International Voice Competition presented by Opera Theater of Pittsburgh and the Gailliot Family Foundation on Nov. 1 and 2 during National Opera Week (Oct. 24-Nov. 2, 2014). Three top winners receive cash prizes totaling $9,000 resident artist contracts in Opera Theater’s SummerFest 2015.

Opera Theater launches third SummerFest
Opera Theater presents a 16-day festival of opera, musicals, new works and recitals, July 10-27, 2014, in the beautiful and historic Twentieth Century Club, 4201 Bigelow Blvd, Pittsburgh (15213). SummerFest’s third season features both classic and new operas sung in English and a variety of festive offerings presented in the intimate spaces of one of Pittsburgh’s loveliest architectural treasures in Oakland.

Mozart Camp, an initiative of Opera Theater SummerFest, is a five-day immersion into the life and works of this great composer.
Mozart Camp brings Mozart devotees together to explore the work of this singular genius through lectures, films, discussions, chamber music concerts, vocal recitals, dinners and museum visits. The program centers around the theme “Mozart: A family affair” which investigates music written not just by the master Wolfgang, but also by his father Leopold and son Franz Xaver, and music played by sister Nannerl and his wife Constanze. Mozart Camp will take place July 16-20 at the historic Twentieth Century Club in the heart of the Oakland neighborhood in Pittsburgh.

Opera Theater of Pittsburgh receives grant from OPERA America
Opera Theater SummerFest initiates "My First Time" program to welcome first-time opera-goers of all ages. Through the My First Time initiative, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh plans to break down opera stereotypes to make the opera experience feel more approachable and relevant. My First Time will target young professionals and opera newcomers in an attempt to attract and engage those who might not initially consider themselves opera fans.

OPERA America Awards $300,000 in Grants to Thirteen Opera Companies
Opera Theater has received a grant from OPERA America, the national nonprofit service organization for opera, as part of $300,000 awarded in grants to 13 opera companies through the first year of its Building Opera Audiences grant program, generously funded by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation. This new grant program seeks to support the efforts of North American opera companies to build informed, enthusiastic audiences for opera through innovative marketing projects.
