Artistic Director, The Mastersinger Project

The project will be led by Wagner expert and international star soprano Jane Eaglen, who has an illustrious career performing leading Wagner and dramatic soprano roles in all the major opera houses of the world. Ms. Eaglen has also become a renowned voice teacher and coach, working at New England Conservatory and the Merola Program alongside other ventures.

Pittsburgh Festival Opera launches its Ring Cycle in summer 2018, with one production added each year and performances of the full cycle in 2021 in the Jonathan Dove orchestration. In addition, the company is carrying on its celebrated exploration of rarely performed Strauss operas, continuing with Arabella in 2018. The Mastersinger Project will supply some soloists to the mainstage casts, as vocally appropriate, and all covers. It is anticipated that a number of roles in Rhinegold will be cast from the Mastersingers, including the Rhinemaidens.

This is a unique opportunity for high caliber young singers with dramatic voices to work with one of the most celebrated Wagner and dramatic repertoire artists in the world.

The Mastersinger Project is seeking approximately 10 mature young professional artists with dramatic voices who are looking for expert guidance in honing their art and craft, and are ready for role credits for their resumes. Ms. Eaglen and a team of additional faculty experienced with larger voices will coach Mastersingers in the repertoire of the season and in additional Wagner scenes and concert material. The project will be performance orientated, with participants either performing and/or covering mainstage roles in the season, and performing in a Wagner scenes program and concert.

The program will last for five weeks, starting with rehearsals for Rhinegold on June 18, 2018 and continuing with intensive coaching and performance opportunities through the end of the Festival on July 22, 2018.

Participants will be auditioned alongside Pittsburgh Festival Opera’s regular Young Professional Artists Program candidates. The age limit (35) does not apply to Mastersinger Singers. All are welcome to apply.

Auditions take place in Cincinnati, Denton, Ann Arbor, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Pittsburgh, and by recording. Deadlines vary by city. Visit YAPTracker.com to apply.
